Husky Men’s Basketball: The Washington men’s basketball team received more national recognition today, as they appeared in both the Top 25 AP and USA Today/Coaches polls for the first time this season. The Dawgs elevated to #22 in the AP poll, up from #23 last week. They also emerged at #25 on the Coaches poll, the first time they’ve appeared on that list all year.
The Huskies found themselves in high esteem after salvaging a split in Arizona by knocking off ASU Saturday. UW lost to Arizona on Thursday. The 1-1 road trip allowed the Dawgs to remain in a tie for the top spot in the Pac-10 with UCLA. The Husky men travel to the Bay Area this week for road contests with California and Stanford.

Sounders FC: The Sounders FC announced the winner of their American Idol-like Sounders Super Search last night, selecting Bellevue native Vinicius “Vini” Oliveira as the final member of Seattle’s new MLS club. Oliveira prevailed over nine other finalists who were invited to appear on the one-hour finale of Super Search on KING TV.
Staged at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, the event showcased a two-on-two matchup between four finalists, followed by a one-on-one battle between Oliveira and runner-up Junior Garcia. In a made-for-TV dramatic announcement, Oliveira, a 6’0″, 170-lb forward, was picked over Garcia to become the newest Sounder.
Oliveira, originally from Brazil, moved to the U.S. in 2003 with his family, who settled in Bellevue. He is a 2007 graduate of Bellevue’s Sammamish High School, and played one season of soccer at Bellevue Community College. Oliveira assumes his role as a Sounder today, traveling with the team to their training facility in Oxnard, CA for preseason camp. The Sounders FC open the regular season at Qwest Field on March 19.
